Ellen Berkovitch
AdobeAirstream.com Publisher and Editor in chief
Santa Fe, NM; New York, NY (sometimes)
I became a digital journalism entrepreneur in 2009, launching an online arts magazine that will turn six years old next March. I would love to talk to fellow JAWdesses about opportunities and challenges in digital journalism and independent publishing. I won a small fellowship in early 2014 to investigate launching an environmental podcast reporting explicitly on environmental stories from northern New Mexico and the southern Rockies. (It has not launched yet but is in ideation stage.) In the past I have been a print magazine editor in chief (three times) and a freelance writer specializing in arts, culture, design, as well as (in my '20s), on energy policy and Native American issues for the Rapid City Journal (SD) and Dow Jones (NY). I am eager to re-integrate investigative reporting and focus a lot more on radio, hence would be delighted to discuss radio with others. As well as mid-career challenges for women who must face the need to amp up skills repeatedly with no guarantees about whether this corresponds to what we've known as journalism, in the future.
